China’s Ceramic Tableware Exports Surge 2023, Cementing Its Position as a Leading Global Supplier

The flourishing global catering industry has significantly contributed to the development of the tableware industry. Ceramic tableware, celebrated for its safety, hygiene, heat resistance, and ease of cleaning, has been embraced by consumers as the preferred choice over plastic and metal alternatives. According to an analysis by China Research and Intelligence (CRI), China has emerged as one of the world’s foremost producers and exporters of ceramic tableware.

In 2021, China’s ceramic tableware exports witnessed remarkable growth, with an increase of 21.03% in volume year-on-year, reaching 2,058,600 tons. Export revenues surged by 29.09% to reach US$7.196 billion. The upward trajectory continued into the first ten months of 2022, with exports of 1,671,100 tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.06%, and export revenues of US$6.396 billion, a year-on-year growth of 12.08%.

CRI’s analysis reveals that the average price of China’s ceramic tableware exports has been on an upward trajectory since 2018. It grew from US$2.76 per kilogram in 2018 to US$3.50 per kilogram in 2021. From January to October 2022, the average export price further increased to US$3.83 per kilogram, marking a substantial 10.90% year-on-year growth.

China’s exports of ceramic tableware primarily consist of ceramic tableware, bone china tableware, and other porcelain tableware. In 2021, China exported 1,895,300 tons of other porcelain tableware, accounting for 92.07% of the total export volume of ceramic tableware, and the export value reached US$6,690 million, representing 92.97% of the total export value.

The global reach of Chinese ceramic tableware exports expanded significantly in 2021, with products finding their way to more than two hundred countries and regions across the world. Major export destinations included the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Russian Federation, the Netherlands, Vietnam, Australia, France, Chile, and Italy. The United States emerged as the largest importer of Chinese ceramic tableware, with China exporting 455,000 tons to the U.S. in 2021, accounting for 22.10% of total exports, and amounting to US$1.573 billion, or 21.87% of total exports.

China’s ceramics industry, with its rich history of exports, is expected to continue expanding its global presence. CRI anticipates a continued upward trend in China’s ceramic tableware exports from 2023 to 2032, driven by advancements in technology and increasing demand for high-quality tableware.
